Our Mission
The Mother Teresa program strives to educate children in a Catholic environment, who have varying exceptionalities and/or developmental delays, but do not have severe behavioral, emotional, and/or severe physical limitations.
Philosophy and Objectives
The Mother Teresa Program is designed to focus on students who are in need of intermittent/ limited support in an educational setting. Our program focuses on students who have varying exceptionalities or developmental delays, and are in need of behavioral support, adaptive technology, and a multi-sensory approach to learning in order to succeed in a classroom environment. Students in the Mother Teresa program experience low to below-average intelligence and deficits in adaptive behavior, causing a deficiency in their achievement. Placement in the Mother Teresa Program will allow our students to receive an appropriate education in which they will be capable of achieving success based on their functional level.
The purpose of the Mother Teresa program at St. Agatha Catholic School is to go beyond what is expected in serving exceptional students in a Catholic environment. We provide our students with a modified curriculum that addresses their learning needs, and renders instruction in a Catholic environment.
The goal of the Mother Teresa program is to prepare our students according to their intellectual ability, to be a fully functioning, Catholic member of society.
Curriculum
The Mother Teresa program is based on the Florida State Standards’ Performance Objectives for Elementary Students. Students learn a modified curriculum which includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Religious Formation
- Mathematics
- Reading
- Language Arts
- Computer Skills
- Daily Independent Living Skills
- Social Skills
- Music
- Art and Physical Education in an inclusive setting.
Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for the Mother Teresa program includes, but is not limited to the following:
- A psycho-educational evaluation by a licensed psychologist, no more than three years old.
- A chronological age of nine or higher (grades 3rd – 8th grade).
- An intelligence quotient of 60 or higher.
- Verbal capabilities
- Personal interview with our program’s teacher, placement testing, and determination of student’s needs.
- Toilet training
